Abolition of Prescription Charges and Implications for MAS

Following the decision taken by the Health and Sport Committee at the Scottish Parliament, as of 1 April 2011 patients resident in Scotland will no longer pay a charge when they have a prescription dispensed. Guidance will be issued by the end of the month on how to deal with charges for prescriptions written by doctors from elsewhere in the UK, the cross-border entitlement card and the continued issue of medical exemption certificates.

CPS welcomes the fact that this move will reduce bureaucracy for you and the possibility for losses over prescription charge deductions.

In relation to MAS, Scottish government policy is that there will be no change to the current eligibility criteria for the service. We have asked the Government to look at making changes to the service specification and the ideas we have proposed are currently being examined. More information will follow.
