Anticoagulant Apixaban Launched For Hip And Knee Replacement Patients

Apixaban, a new anticoagulant, was launched yesterday (19 September 2011) for the prevention of venous thromboembolic events in adults who have had elective hip or knee replacement surgery.

Marketed as Eliquis by Bristol-Myers Squibb and Pfizer, the drug is a reversible and selective inhibitor of factor Xa that is initiated up to a day after surgery.

Patients taking apixaban should be observed for signs of bleeding and the drug should be used with caution by those who have an increased risk of haemorrhage.
