Concerns About Effectiveness of Implanon Raised

Concerns about the effectiveness of the Implanon (etonogestrel) contraceptive implant were raised by a Channel 4 News investigation yesterday (4 January 2010). The concerns relate to insertion of the device.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency has confirmed that it has received 1,607 suspected adverse drug reaction reports associated with Implanon, including 584 regarding pregnancy. In nine of the pregnancy reports, the terms “device failure”, “device dislocation”, “device ineffective” and “device difficult to use” were used.
