All newly registered pharmacists should be competent independent prescribers, Scotland’s chief pharmaceutical officer Bill Scott said at the Pharmacists’ Defence Association’s conference last week.
Speaking in support of the PDA’s plans to drive a more clinical role for community pharmacists, Mr Scott said that pharmacists need to get out of the dispensary and put their knowledge of medicines into practice. “Dispensing, for pharmacy, is a sacred cow that technology will ensure goes to the abattoir. We have to base our practice on direct patient care,” he said.
Diagnoses should continue to be made by doctors and other diagnosticians, but pharmacists should all take on the prescribing role, he said.
