Gefitinib (Iressa; AstraZeneca) has once again been rejected for use in NHS Scotland.
The drug cannot be recommended for advanced non-small lung cancer because it does not offer value for money, the Scottish Medicines Consortium said in its latest round of drug appraisals. Gefitinib was initially rejected in May this year (PJ, 15 May 2010, p470).
Five drugs, including denosumab (Prolia; Amgen) have been accepted for use in NHS Scotland. Denosumab can now be prescribed for the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women at increased risk of fractures, but certain restrictions apply to its use.
