Instalment Dispensing Problem With The EMIS Prescribing System

PSD has informed us that an intermittent fault has been identified in the EMIS prescribing system. Where a GP requests instalment dispensing and enters the dispensing frequency (e.g. daily, weekly, monthly) into the system, a <I> is printed which indicates the instalment dispensing request. However the textual dispensing frequency does not always print on the paper prescription form but is available in the electronic message via scanning.

EMIS have advised their prescribing practices to be vigilant and ensure that the paper prescription form contains all relevant prescribing details. If this advice is followed then PSD have no issue and the GP Practice will resolve the issue. However, we have no guarantee that all prescribers will follow this; therefore PSD has introduced a temporary change to their business rules to deal with this issue.

  • PSD will accept an instalment endorsement claim provided that the prescriber <I> is present against the item and that the CP has endorsed the item “PC” or “PMR.” This only applies to items printed with an <I> but without a dispensing frequency printed.

  • Ensure that all relevant information including PC or PMR and the instalment dispensing endorsements are added both electronically and on the paper prescription form.
