Multiple sclerosis patients with highly-active relapsing remitting disease have a new treatment option.
Fingolimod is now available for those with high disease activity despite having received treatment with beta-interferon and for patients with rapidly evolving severe relapsing remitting MS.
The drug, marketed as Gilenya by Novartis, is a sphingosine 1-phosphate receptor modulator. It stops lymphocytes leaving the lymph nodes and reduces the number of lymphocyte cells entering the central nervous system, where they would be involved in nerve inflammation and nerve tissue damage.
