There is no clear difference in benefit between medicines added as a third treatment option for patients with type 2 diabetes who are already taking metformin and a sulfonylurea, according to a meta-analysis published in Annals of Internal Medicine.
Researchers analysed data from 18 trials including a total of 4,535 participants and found that, compared with placebo, different drug classes did not differ in their effect on HbA1c levels. However, weight gain was observed for patients taking insulins and thiazolidinediones and weight loss for those taking glucagon-like peptide agonists (ie, exenatide and liraglutide). Twice as many episodes of severe hypoglycaemia were seen for patient taking insulins versus non-insulin antidiabetic drugs.
