Community pharmacists in Aberdeen are part of a scheme to help prevent overdose-related deaths in drug misusers.
Three pharmacists from the Stuart R Notman Pharmacy are supplying drug misusers with naloxone as part of the "Heartstart — naloxone take home programme" launched by NHS Grampian last month (31 August 2011).
The pilot is due to be rolled out to other pharmacies in the Grampian region and will be evaluated in February 2012.
Pharmacists are teaching drug misusers about the risks of overdose as well as training them in life support and cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques. Drug misusers are also taught how to administer naloxone in an emergency.
