Prucalopride should not be used to treat women with chronic constipation, the latest issue of the Drug and Therapeutics Bulletin has concluded, despite the drug being recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.
After reviewing available evidence for prucalopride, the bulletin’s authors say the trials were short and failed to compare the drug with existing treatments or to specify previous laxative use — which is a requirement for taking prucalopride — as a criterion.
No more than a third of patients achieved the primary outcome of at least three spontaneous complete bowel movements per week, they point out, adding that the drug is expensive compared with other laxatives and associated with a range of common side effects.
